BODHI

I’m apprehensive as I wait for her answer. I can usually read people fairly well, but when it comes to Vanny, I never know what she’ll do. She’s stubborn and unpredictable—a dangerous combination. Especially when my future hangs in the balance and my happiness hinges on her decision.

Her eyes look like large blue pools swirling with confusion. She chews on her lower lip, working the dark pink flesh back and forth between her teeth. I’m about to speak up, giving her an out when she finally answers. “I’m willing to give us a shot, but we need ground rules.”

She didn’t say no. I can deal with some rules.

“Hit me with them,” I say.

“We spend the remainder of this weekend together and then once it’s over, we evaluate and decide what comes next. If we’re both satisfied with the way things are going, we continue to see each other. If one of us or both of us aren’t satisfied, then we go our separate ways.”

“That doesn’t give me much time to impress you,” I say.

“It’s better than no time,” she points out, and I quickly nod my agreement. “Will you agree to my rules?” she asks.

Pressing my lips together, I nod. “I agree. Everything you mentioned is reasonable.”

“Should we shake on it?” she asks.

“I have a better idea.” I raise my glass and she follows my lead. “To this weekend. May it be everything we want and more.”

“Cheers.” She taps her glass against mine and we both take a sip.

“There.” I set my drink down. “That’s much better than a handshake.”

She arches one of her brows, looking amused. “How so? I mean aside from tasting wonderful?”

“Alcohol is the strongest bonding agent. Any promise sealed with a drink containing it cannot be broken. Which means you can’t undo an oath, so don’t even think of trying to cut my time short with you. Not that you would.” I wink at her.

“Of course I wouldn’t.” She tries to look innocent—she doesn’t succeed.

“You need to work on your poker face,” I say.

“What are you talking about?”

“You have absolutely no poker face at all. You have an anti-poker face.” I chuckle.

“That’s not true. I’m a great actress. Every day at work I act as if I like people.”

“Your acting kind of sucks, then.”

“You’re so mean.”

“I’m being honest. Your face always shows how you’re feeling.”

“Really?”

“Yep.”

“Dammit. I’ve been trying so hard to be nice at work. I love helping people when they’re not feeling well. I just don’t really like people that much in general.”

I laugh. “Maybe you should’ve gone to school for a job that requires no interaction with others. You could’ve been an author.”

“Yeah, except I can’t write. And I don’t like to read books. Please don’t tell Mariko I said that. She’d be so disappointed.”

“How does she not know this if she’s your best friend?”

“I lied about it. She looked so crestfallen when I said I didn’t read, that I quickly added the words ‘just kidding.’”

“You’ve been lying to her for how many years now?”

“Four, and it’s not a full-fledged lie.
